Your first notebook
From the library, create a notebook, give it a name and choose a cover and paper. Open it to start writing. Add pages as your ideas grow.
You can use local notebooks without signing in. AI features require a signed-in account and an available allowance.
Writing & editing
Choose a pen, pencil or highlighter from the writing toolbar. Select a color and adjust thickness in the tool options. Apple Pencil is supported on compatible iPads; finger-drawing preferences are in Settings.
Use the text tool for typed notes and the image tool to insert photos or files. The lasso selects content so you can move, resize, copy or delete it. Undo and redo help recover changes.
For navigation, use touch gestures and the space around the page. If drawing and scrolling conflict, check your finger-drawing setting. Report any disappearing ink or unexpected movement through Support.
Make a page Neat
- Open a notebook with the notes you want to work on.
- Open Make it Neat and choose the source pages.
- Choose Aesthetic, Balanced, Detailed Study or Visual Summary.
- Start generation and keep the app open while it works.
- Review the result. Check important text, diagrams, equations and facts before relying on it.
Generated pages contain image-based artwork. Add handwriting and text above them, or use Edit page for corrections. Page history lets you revisit saved versions.
AI can omit or change details. A polished page is still worth checking against your original notes.
Chat with your notes
Open Neat AI inside your notebook. Choose whether to include page context, then ask a question. Recent conversation history can also be included in follow-ups.
- “Explain the main idea on this page in simple words.”
- “Quiz me on these notes, one question at a time.”
- “Create a beginner guitar practice page with an original four-chord exercise.”
When a response offers Create Neat page, use it to save the draft and open generation settings. Review the draft before generating. Closing the chat panel is different from explicitly stopping a request.
Plans & allowances
Free includes 3 generated pages and 3 AI edits monthly. Lite includes 30 pages and 15 edits monthly. Pro includes 15 pages and 10 edits weekly. A multi-page result uses one generation for each output page.
Writing, manual annotations and undo do not use the AI edit allowance. Sign-in and server usage limits still apply to AI. In supported beta builds, choosing to continue with Free keeps local note features available.
The beta does not take subscription payments. Temporary Lite/Pro activation depends on the current testing window; if activation is unavailable, contact Support. The Restore Purchases control cannot restore a paid subscription while billing is inactive.
Export & protect your notes
Use PDF export to share a readable copy. For an editable backup, open Settings → Backup & restore and export a .neatbackup file to Files or a storage location you choose.
Restore imports notebook copies from a backup. Keep your original backup until you have checked the restored content.
Notebooks are saved on your device. Signing in does not automatically upload or sync them. Export a backup before removing the app or changing devices.
Something not right?
Tell us which device and app build you used, what you expected and what happened. Include steps to reproduce it, but leave out passwords and private notebook content.
